Portion 1: Transfer, Supply, Reconnaissance
This really is a brief pictorial account of the history of fixed wing soaring in the functions of transfer, supply, examen, patrol and inventory together with the British Columbia Forest Service. Early Years
Presently, many of us heard about or perhaps seen the
results with the BC Forest Branch's 1st foray into the
world of plane. A contract was initiated by the
Department of Lands while using Hoffar Electric motor Boat
Firm for the development of a sole engine
two seat traveling by air boat, to become used primarily for
patrolling. The H-2 biplane was constructed during
the summer of 1918 and test plane tickets conducted
toward the end of August and early Sept. 2010. On
Sept. 2010 4th, on a single of the early on tests more than
Vancouver, the aircraft experienced engine
complications and the preliminary elected to move for the
waters of Coal Harbour. It never made it. The
aircraft stalled (quit flying) and spiralled onto the roof of a Number 1: Hoffar H-2 crash Vancouver Sept. 1918
property in West Vancouver. The H-2 was destroyed however the
young preliminary luckily continual only minimal injuries. This ended the idea of Forest Service aircraft control for almost 80 years.
In Sept of 1919, the 1st aerial
discovery of a forest fire in B. C. took place more than
Duncan. The pilot of any Curtiss JN-4 (possibly
during an air flow mail flight) spotted the fire and
arrived at Duncan to survey it to the Forest
Part, who then simply took reductions action.
The end of WW1 saw a extra of aeroplanes and
support equipment in both The european union and North
America. Following your war, government authorities and
organizations recognized the significance of aircraft in
roles just like patrols and transport of men and

materials. The Canadian government formed the
Land Air Board to oversee the developing civil
aviators in Canada. Six air channels were founded across the country in 1920 which includes Vancouver, located at Jericho Beach. The Vancouver Atmosphere Station rapidly acquired 2 types of flying motorboats.
The Curtiss HS-2L was a single engine several place biplane with a payload of up to seven hundred pounds and a top acceleration of 70 mph. The Felixstowe F. 3 was a large dual engine soaring boat capable of rates over eighty-five mph and a payload up to 12 people with gear. These airplane were not utilized operationally in 1920 nevertheless the HS-2L was tested and evaluated by simply
the Forest Branch and Air Stop in the fall.
The 1921 fire time of year saw the two types found in
various jobs by the Forest Branch including
patrols, fireplace suppression and forest
examen, inventory and photography.
A single HS-2L was also located in Kamloops during
1922 proved to be a serious fire season in
B. C. 's coast. The Farreneheit. 3 demonstrated it's worth
transporting men and equipment to fires. Near the
end of September the N. 3 transferred men, products
and camp supplies into a fire close to Buttle Pond on
Vancouver Island. The F. several saved days and nights
of floor travel and undoubtedly avoided the
flames from to become major celebration.
By 1923, the Forest Branch had become
somewhat disenchanted with both types of
aeroplanes as they had been becoming out of date.
Aircraft efficiency was not approximately
requirements especially in the mountains, and
aircraft protection costs had been high. In 1924
the Branch applied the plane on a casual basis
and only flew two dozen hours. By 1926 the
regular use of aeroplanes for forestry work was
severely cut down.
